Snowy Day Project: DIY Chalkboard Labels

What do you do on a snowy day that doesn't involve spending money (or shoveling snow)? You organize your craft room, that's what. I don't have a fancy, coordinated craft room. Would I pass one up? Absolutely not. With three sons to put through college, I use what I have around the house.

I have a section of my bedroom designated for all my stuff, a “She Section” if you will. It is made of old furniture from around the house, nothing matches. my storage is makeshift. I pick up storage boxes when they are on sale. I have repurposed some shoe boxes - my sons’ cleats come in the cool boxes that slide open like a drawer.

There is a tall dresser that we have had in the basement and I have wanted to refurbish it for storage. My idea was to paint it white, change out the hardware, and then use chalkboard paint on drawer fronts. I got the inspiration from this by Jessica Ray Home.

The husband put the kibosh on it as it was his dad’s. Eventually, he will see the light but until then I had to Plab B it.  I decided to make chalkboard tags out of materials I had. I decided to make chalkboard tags out of materials I had.

I made a template. Then I rummaged for card stock, chalkboard paint, double-sided tape, pencil, a foam brush (for the best application, a roller is best).

(Download a copy of the label template by clicking on the image.)

From the template, I traced and cut the base and the overlay from the cardstock.

Then it was a matter of painting the overlay with the paint. I didn’t have any rollers for my mini-roller so I used a foam brush. Chalkboard paint is thick and can be moody. The roller does a great job in making sure there are no lines...not the case with the brush.

The final step was securing the overlay to the base with double-sided tape.

Though far from perfect, this little project succeeded: filled my labeling needs, cost me nothing, and kept me from shoveling snow. It was a win-win-win project. .Hopefully by summer I will be giving the drawers a makeover.

PS. The final snow total was 17.5".
